Depression manifests in many ways, with a variety of symptoms, but at its core, there are usually just a few causes – trauma, difficulty with connection, and not following your heart’s desires. As a result, your happiness and stress hormones get thrown out of balance, and the light at the end of the tunnel seems distant. But here’s the truth: there is light. You came into this world with a purpose, and you were not born to be depressed or burdened by unchangeable genetic limitations. Science continues to advance, and one of the most groundbreaking findings in genetics is epigenetics – the ability of the mind and body to control the expression of genes. This means that by identifying and addressing the root causes of your depression (your environment, childhood experiences, and early emotions), you can reconnect with the light that’s always been inside you. Your genes still carry the potential for healing, awaiting activation.

Depression often feels like a loss of meaning, a constant cloud of confusion, sadness, and regret. While anxiety is driven by fear of future outcomes, depression tends to keep us anchored in past events, making it difficult to envision a positive future. A 47-year-old client came to me struggling with deep depression, seeking relief from years of emotional pain. His childhood was filled with abuse, a depressed mother, and an unstable home environment. Despite trying various therapies and techniques, he couldn’t fully release the sadness that consumed him or make the significant changes he desired. During our session, even as we began the induction, emotions started to pour out. The simple act of allowing himself to feel what he had long suppressed was overwhelming. We quickly discovered that his depression stemmed from childhood trauma—memories of a crying mother, an abusive father, and overwhelming emotional burdens placed on him as a child. This led him to believe that life would always be painful, which became a belief that shaped his entire existence for 40 years. But amidst the pain, he found solace in music, something that kept him going through tough times. We also uncovered moments of unconditional love from his dog and a caring neighbor, which he had forgotten. These memories were overshadowed by his pain, but they were crucial in realizing that he was lovable and that there were people who cared for him. After the session, he felt emotional relief and began creating space for more healing. A month later, he shared his progress: he was now pursuing his dream of writing songs and even took his guitar out of storage after 30 years. His depression had lifted, and he began making plans for the future, something he hadn’t done in decades. Healing comes from within, and I am honored to guide my clients on their journey toward light and transformation.

Common symptoms of depression include persistent sadness or low mood, loss of interest or pleasure in activities, changes in appetite or weight, sleep disturbances, fatigue or low energy, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, difficulty concentrating, and thoughts of death or suicide. If you experience several of these symptoms for more than two weeks, it may be beneficial to seek professional help.

Treatments for depression typically include psychotherapy, medication, or a combination of both. Common therapies include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Interpersonal Therapy (IPT), and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). Antidepressant medications, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), may also be prescribed. Additionally, lifestyle changes and support groups can be beneficial.

Evidence-based treatments for depression, such as CBT and antidepressant medications, have been shown to be highly effective. Many individuals experience significant improvement in their symptoms and overall quality of life. The effectiveness of treatment can depend on factors such as the severity of the depression, the individual’s commitment to the treatment plan, and the presence of a supportive environment.

The time it takes to see improvement can vary depending on the individual and the type of treatment. Some people may start to feel better within a few weeks of starting therapy or medication, while others may take several months to notice significant changes. It is important to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider to adjust the treatment plan as needed and to remain patient and committed to the process.

You should seek professional help if you experience symptoms of depression that interfere with your daily life, relationships, or ability to function.
