Understanding the Origins of Phobias
At some point in your life, whether consciously or hidden in your subconscious, you linked a particular event, situation, person, or even animal to a life-threatening scenario. This connection, made in a split second, has stayed with you, continuing to trigger those same intense emotions years later. For instance, a fear of dogs can stem from an attack, a traumatic emotional experience, or even just a mention of dogs. Anything can spark a phobia, and the only way to release it is by addressing and processing the suppressed emotions and unresolved feelings tied to that trigger, allowing you to become neutral toward the source of your fear.

A Case Study from My Hypnotherapy Practice

A young woman came to me with a severe phobia of cats. Not only did she experience fear, but she also developed allergies whenever she was near a cat or in a cat-friendly environment. She was confused because, in the past, she loved cats and had always been a happy, stress-free person. Her life was going well, so she couldn’t understand why she developed this phobia and allergy. During our RTT session, we uncovered the root cause of her fear. When she was 24 years old, she had a wonderful relationship with her partner and they owned a cat. Everything seemed perfect, and they were even planning for a baby. One day, her partner unexpectedly told her he had found someone else and no longer had feelings for her. At the exact moment she received this heartbreaking news, she was holding the cat in her lap. I explained that when we experience sudden shock or trauma, our mind captures everything around us, like a camera, associating the event with danger. This image or “mental snapshot” is stored in our subconscious and can be triggered later. For my client, the cat became an unconscious trigger, reminding her of the painful breakup. Despite trying to avoid cats, her body still reacted with allergy symptoms. The session revealed more about her attachment issues, fear of loneliness, and lack of self-love. She had repressed these emotions for years, numbing herself with perfectionism and overachieving. By the end of the session, she realized that her happiness depended on her inner state, not on external relationships. She understood that she was enough on her own and had control over her life. After a follow-up session a month later, focusing on childhood trauma, her allergy symptoms were gone. While she didn’t immediately fall in love with cats again, she felt empowered by her own healing. Her biggest takeaway was that she could be happy and content on her own, without relying on others for her happiness.
